Career development

There are a variety of working roles available in the fitness and leisure sub-sector, which include:
• Fitness: Gym Instructor, Group Exercise Instructor, Personal Trainer, Pilates Teacher, Yoga Teacher, Exercise Referral Specialist, Teacher Trainer and Assessor.
• Leisure: Recreation Assistant, Lifeguard, Cleaner and Maintenance Staff, Cafeteria Staff, Receptionist and Duty Manager.
Individuals usually enter the industry at Level 2 and some choose to stay at this level, delivering group exercise sessions for healthy populations (e.g. circuits, gym sessions and ETM) or working on the gym floor (e.g. inducting clients).

Some individuals choose to progress their career and might choose to work as:
• A Personal Trainer who works with referred populations and specialist client groups, either privately or within a specialist project (local referral scheme) or in a health club chain.
• Tutor or Assessor.
• Training or Sales with a fitness equipment supplier (e.g. Life Fitness or Technogym).
• Quality Assurance and Qualification Development; this can entail working with one of the awarding organisations that develops and certificates the wide range of qualifications that are available within the sub-sector.
