Why write a cover letter?
A cover letter is just as important as a CV and is essential when applying for a job. Most employers spend less than a minute looking over each application, so you need to make your cover letter stand out and express why you are the right person for their position. Keep the cover letter brief and to one A4 page, using the same font throughout.
Research the company
Before applying for the vacancy do your research – make sure you know what the vacancy is for and how the company works. The best way to do this is on the internet. This will give you vital information that will help you adapt your cover letter and CV; you may also be asked about the company in your interview. This will show the employer that you are really interested in the position.
Writing your cover letter
Address your cover letter. This will ensure the letter goes to the correct person/department. If you are not sure who to address it to please feel free to contact me or address it as Dear Sir/Madam.
What to put in your cover letter
First/opening paragraph: this should be short and to the point, explain why you are writing and also include where you heard about the position.
Example: I would like to be considered for the Personal Trainer vacancy which I found on Premier Training’s website.
Second Paragraph
Explain why you are suitable for the position; briefly describe your skills and qualifications that are relevant to the vacancy. Go back to the advert to see if they have asked for any skills in particular and make sure you have covered the requirements.
Third Paragraph
Show the employer how you will contribute to the company, what you have to offer what your career goals are; you can go into more detail here than on your CV.
Fourth Paragraph
Reiterate your interest in the vacancy and why you feel you would be the right candidate for the position. At this point it is a good idea to say that you would like to meet with the employer to discuss the position in more detail.
Closing paragraph
Finish your letter with ‘Yours sincerely’ if you have addressed the letter to a specific person and ‘Yours faithfully’ if you have put ‘Dear Sir/Madam’.
